Rocker attended the First Presbyterian Day School in Macon, Georgia. During high school, John was a pitcher.
In 1993, he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 18th round of the amateur draft. In 1998, Rocker was promoted to the major league club.
John was 1–3 with a 2.13 ERA in 38 innings pitched in his rookie season.
In April 2000, Rocker was suspended by MLB after making ethnic and racial remarks that “offended practically every element of society” in a December 1999 Sports Illustrated article.
